Cargo transportation simulation for the straight line and terminal route plans

Developed for: the research group of the Automobile Transport Faculty (FAT) of the Volgograd State Technical University

Purpose: a research work intended for building a simulation model for several dozens of concurrently operating carrier companies, inclusive terminal centers

The program is intended for building a simulation model for the operation of transport companies engaged in transportation by the straight line and terminal route plans. The program result is an assessment of the company’s overall costs of transportation taking into account 130 various parameters (administrative, technical, climatic etc.).

A traditional approach to analyzing and scheduling traffic flows as well as to carriers’ operation examination is based on average statistic indicators, general statistics distribution, and relatively simple models. The latter ones allow describing only specific carriage stages as they are not designed for a comprehensive deeper study of the transport operations in general. Our program contains a simulation model enabling to describe and forecast the behavior of transport systems more adequately.

The first version of the program implemented a simulation model wherein a user could set the model parameters and operating conditions for the transport system. As the outcome, a PhD thesis was defended; the program got the approval of the Transport Affairs Office at the Administration of the Volgograd region. To be more specific, the design model solved the following tasks:

  • The most effective location for a terminal in the Volgograd region was determined.
  • The sets of the most favorable conditions as well as the most effective operation modes for both the Volgograd region transportation system and the transit route Moscow – Volgograd – Makhachkala were determined.
  • A thorough analysis of the operation modes for several carriers of the Volgograd region was conducted.

The second program version was parallelized and adapted for implementation in Grid environment. The application was forwarded for participation in Intel contest “I’ve got a comprehension and knowledge of the Grid technology” and won the 1st prize.
