Purpose: the system for collecting and monitoring information on urban environment

The quality of our everyday life depends on many factors, different by nature. Some individuals prove to be unable to influence some of these factors without outside assistance. For instance, a person is unaware whether his residential area or another location, where he is going to move into, is safe and secure enough. Even if he knows, it’s beyond his competence to influence the environment. Municipal services and other institutions responsible for the urban environment are overloaded and are often unable to provide a full control. The given application is designed to collect, monitor, analyze and provide information on the quality of life in various urban areas (cities, suburbs, towns, etc.). In addition to the environmental issues, the following social factors improving the life quality are considered: noise level, air pollution, infrastructure development and convenience, area purity.

The system consists of the software and hardware components.

  • The server application is intended for the client queries processing. The given module is a WCF service interfacing with the data collection client and the data scanning client.
  • The data collection client operates on a laptop PC registering indications. The user interface is WPF-based.
  • The control client is installed on a mobile device and used to manage the data collection client. The application enables receiving information on the sensors current status as well as controlling sensor indications. The data collection client interacts with the control client through WCF.
  • The data scanning client enables viewing the gathered information and managing the user profile. The client is a Silverlight program using Bing Maps for displaying maps.
  • The administration client is an ASP.NET MVC application allowing the management of system settings, users, and sensors registration.
  • A so-called backpack is a portable computer (e.g. a laptop or a netbook), controlling sensors operation. Presented in 2010, the prototype supported two gas analyzers – TGS2201 (an exhaust gas sensor for the gasoline/diesel fuel), TGS800R (an air composition sensor) – and a thermal resistor for temperature measurement. A microcontroller BU0836 was used for analog-to-digital signals conversion.
